As a veterinarian and passionate animal health expert, I am always fascinated by the incredible diversity of the animal kingdom\u2014and Europe’s largest insect, the stag beetle (Lucanus cervus<\/em>), is no exception. Reaching an impressive average length of 70 mm with exceptional specimens growing up to 90 mm, this magnificent insect truly commands attention and respect in the natural world.<\/p>\n Stag beetles primarily inhabit lush deciduous forests rich in ancient trees, particularly oak. Their geographic range spans across Europe, extending into the Middle East, Turkey, Iran, and parts of North Africa. Interestingly, the adult phase of the stag beetle’s life is remarkably brief. The vast majority of their existence is spent underground or inside decaying wood as larvae. Developing primarily in the rotting wood of broadleaf trees\u2014with a special preference for oak\u2014these larvae feed and grow slowly over an astonishing period of 4 to 6 years before finally pupating and emerging as adults.<\/p>\n One of the most striking features of the male stag beetle is its long, prominent mandibles, which strongly resemble the antlers of a stag. While these appendages look fearsome, they are entirely harmless to humans. In nature, males use their impressive antlers strictly for wrestling matches against rival males during the breeding season, rather than for biting or causing harm.<\/p>\n Despite their imposing size, stag beetles are increasingly rare, localized, and vulnerable. Due to continuous habitat loss, modern forestry practices, deforestation, and overcollection by enthusiasts, these remarkable insects are facing declining populations.
