When you first encounter the Moloch horridus—commonly known as the thorny devil—its fearsome appearance might lead you to believe it is a dangerous predator. Named after the ancient pagan deity Moloch, this remarkable lizard belongs to the Agamid family. However, despite its menacing moniker and spiky exterior, this creature is entirely harmless to humans and poses no threat to anything larger than an ant.

Widely distributed across the arid sandy deserts and semi-deserts of central and western Australia, the thorny devil is a diurnal creature, meaning it is most active during the daylight hours. Growing up to 22 cm in length, these lizards move with a distinct, slow-paced gait, keeping their bodies elevated on outstretched legs while their tails barely brush the ground. When startled or threatened by a potential predator, the thorny devil employs a brilliant defense mechanism: it dips its head downward to reveal a specialized spiky growth on the back of its neck. This “false head” acts as a decoy, effectively tricking predators into attacking a non-vital area.

Perhaps the most fascinating veterinary and biological marvel of the Moloch horridus is its specialized mechanism for hydration. Living in some of the harshest desert environments on Earth, these lizards do not drink water in the traditional way. Instead, specialized microscopic channels between their scales allow them to absorb moisture through their skin via capillary action. When the lizard touches morning dew or damp sand, the water is drawn upward across its body and directly into its mouth, ensuring its survival in extreme drought conditions.

Meet the Moloch horridus: The Gentle Giant of the Agamid Family When you first encounter the Moloch horridus—commonly known as the thorny devil—its fearsome appearance might lead you to believe it is a dangerous predator.
