These slender, eel-like fish locate a sea cucumber and back their way directly into the host’s cloaca\u2014the posterior opening used for both excretion and respiration\u2014effectively using the sea cucumber’s internal cavity as a safe house to hide from predators.<\/p>\n
While this relationship might sound like a simple case of commensalism, the reality varies wildly depending on the specific species of pearlfish.
