Despite its intriguing moniker, the Grey Go-away-bird (Crinifer concolor) is certainly no banana lover! This unique avian species belongs to the turaco family and is naturally native to the warm, sun-drenched landscapes of Southern Africa, including Namibia, Zimbabwe, northern Botswana, and northern South Africa.

These birds thrive exceptionally well in bushy areas and open forests. As part of their natural husbandry and nutritional needs in the wild, they feast mainly on a variety of fruits such as wild figs and berries, alongside a protein-rich intake of termites and snails. Their diet is further rounded out with flowers, delicate buds, and fresh leaves.

Adult Grey Go-away-birds can grow up to an impressive 50 cm in length. They are easily spotted in the wild by their long tail feathers, prominent crest, and sleek grey plumage. Highly social creatures, they are frequently observed moving about in small groups and are widely recognized for their loud, distinctive vocalizations.

Have you ever wondered how this bird earned its unusual common name? The Grey Go-away-bird gets its title from its loud, repetitive call that sounds precisely like “ka-werr” or “go-way, go-way.” In the wild, the birds use this vocal warning system to alert flock members of potential danger or to successfully deter intruders from entering their established territory.

Introduction to the Grey Go-away-bird Despite its intriguing moniker, the Grey Go-away-bird (Crinifer concolor) is certainly no banana lover!
