They use their baleen plates to strain massive quantities of water, capturing microscopic prey. A human body simply cannot pass down a baleen whale’s esophagus.<\/p>\n
So, why did this happen? Incidents of humpbacks engulfing humans or non-prey items are exceptionally rare, but they do happen due to a phenomenon known as mistaken identity. When humpbacks are engaged in frantic lunge-feeding\u2014surfacing rapidly through dense balls of baitfish\u2014their visibility and sensory focus are heavily compromised. In the murky, chaotic waters, a swimmer can easily be misinterpreted as a dense school of fish or marine activity.<\/p>\n
Ultimately, this dramatic encounter serves as a powerful reminder of the sheer power of wild marine life and the importance of maintaining a safe, respectful distance from feeding cetaceans.
