Named in honor of Oregon’s very first superintendent of parks—a true visionary who championed coastal conservation—the Samuel H. Boardman Scenic Trail offers some of the most breathtaking Pacific Northwest vistas for nature lovers and their four-legged companions. Spanning over 12 miles of dramatic coastline, this magnificent corridor features secluded beaches, jagged sea stacks, and ancient spruce forests that make for an unforgettable outdoor adventure.

As a veterinarian and pet care expert, I always remind pet parents that majestic coastal trails come with unique environmental hazards. While exploring the Samuel H. Boardman corridor, keep your dog safely leashed at all times. The cliffs are steep, unstable, and often hundreds of feet above the crashing surf. Additionally, protect your canine’s paws from sharp rocks, hot sand, and rough terrain by checking them regularly during your hike.

Physical exertion on uneven coastal trails requires careful management of your pet’s hydration and energy levels. Always pack plenty of fresh, clean drinking water for your dog to prevent saltwater toxicity, which can occur if they drink from the ocean or stagnant tidal pools. After your hike, thoroughly rinse your pet’s coat and paws to remove salt, sand, and potential burrs, ensuring their skin remains healthy and irritation-free.
