In a truly remarkable twist of evolutionary design, male seahorses are the only species in the entire animal kingdom where the males become pregnant and give birth to live young. This specialized role places the responsibility of gestation squarely on the father, a rare phenomenon that ensures the survival of the species in often perilous marine environments.
Courtship and the Brood Pouch Transfer
The journey of seahorse reproduction begins with an intricate and synchronized courtship dance that can last for several days. During this elaborate ritual, the male and female entwine their tails and swim together in a display of aquatic grace. Once bonded, the female deposits her mature eggs into a specialized pouch located on the male’s abdomen, known as the brood pouch or marsupium.
