A prime example of this was discovered in April 2020, when marine researchers exploring an Australian deep-sea canyon documented a massive coiled Siphonophora measuring an astounding 48 meters (nearly 157 feet) in length, making it potentially one of the longest animals ever recorded.

Navigating the water column requires precise physiological adaptations. Siphonophora achieve this through a specialized gas-filled structure located at the top of the colony known as the pneumatophore, or float. Interaction with Humans: Beauty and Danger

While many Siphonophora are mesmerizing to observe, caution is always warranted when encountering them in the wild. Certain species—most notably the infamous Portuguese man-of-war (often mistaken for a true jellyfish)—possess potent venom housed within their stinging tentacles. This venom is used to immobilize prey and can be extremely painful, and in rare cases deadly, to humans.
