A Remarkable Symbiosis: Claws, Anemones, and Defense
The defining characteristic of Lybia tessellata is its practice of carrying living sea anemones—most commonly from the genera Bunodeopsis or Triactis producta—firmly clasped within its specialized, slender chelae (claws). Resembling miniature cheerleader pom-poms or boxing gloves, these anemones serve as primary defensive armaments. When threatened by predatory fish or encroaching invertebrates, the crab aggressively brandishes its stinging appendages, deterring predators with the anemones’ potent cnidocytes (stinging cells).
This partnership is reciprocal and mutually beneficial. While the crab secures a reliable defensive shield and an effective tool for sweeping micro-particles and debris from the water column for sustenance, the anemones receive constant mobility, enhanced access to oxygen-rich water flow, and food scraps gathered during the crab’s feeding activities. Fascinatingly, if a Pom-Pom Crab loses an anemone, it has been observed actively cleaving its remaining anemone into two halves, both of which regenerate into complete organisms, ensuring each claw remains equipped.
Physical Characteristics and Natural Habitat
Native to the shallow, warm reef environments of the tropical Indo-Pacific—ranging from the Red Sea and East Africa to Indonesia and French Polynesia—the Pom-Pom Crab is exceptionally cryptic. Typically reaching an adult carapace width of merely 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters (with leg spans occasionally reaching up to 5 centimeters), its modest size allows it to navigate intricate crevices within live rock formations.

Due to its peaceful temperament and compact dimensions, Lybia tessellata is a celebrated inhabitant of nano-reef aquariums. Successful captive husbandry requires mimicking its stable natural reef parameters:
Maintain water temperatures between 72°F and 78°F (22°C to 26°C), a specific gravity of 1.023 to 1.025, and a stable pH range of 8.1 to 8.4. Adequate calcium, magnesium, and trace iodine levels are critical to support healthy exoskeleton development and regular molting cycles. During the molting process, the crab temporarily sets its anemones aside, shedding its old exoskeleton before retrieving its defensive partners once the new cuticle begins to harden.
Nutritionally, while the crab gathers detritus via its anemones, a balanced captive diet should include supplemented micro-pellets, cyclops, finely chopped mysis shrimp, and marine plankton. Caretakers must house them exclusively with peaceful tank mates; predatory fish such as wrasses, puffers, or aggressive hawkfish should be strictly avoided to prevent predation.
