Deep beneath the ocean’s surface lies one of the ocean’s most charming and unusual inhabitants: Helicocranchia, commonly known as the piglet squid. Earning its nickname from an uncanny resemblance to a cartoon pig or a ceramic piggy bank, this cephalopod captures the imagination of marine enthusiasts and scientists alike.
Anatomy Behind the Illusion
While its appearance suggests a cute little snout and expressive facial features, a closer look reveals the fascinating biology of this deep-sea dweller. Those prominent dark features are indeed its eyes, but what appears to be a snout is actually a muscular siphon used for propulsion.
