Why Peanuts Are Dangerous for Squirrels: A Veterinarian's Guide to Proper Wildlife Nutrition

When we see backyard squirrels scampering across our lawns, it is only natural to want to share a snack with them. For generations, a handful of leftover peanuts has been the go-to treat for many wildlife enthusiasts. However, as a veterinary professional, I often have to share a surprising and critical piece of advice: squirrels should not be fed peanuts.

The Nutritional Trap of Peanuts

While squirrels certainly seem to love peanuts, these popular legumes are actually terrible for their health. Peanuts are nutritionally deficient for squirrels, lacking essential vitamins and minerals while being extremely high in fat. When squirrels consume a diet rich in peanuts, they miss out on the diverse nutrients they need to maintain strong bones, healthy fur, and a robust immune system.

Metabolic Bone Disease and Other Risks

The dangers of feeding peanuts go far beyond simple poor nutrition. Peanuts contain high levels of phosphorus and are low in calcium. When a squirrel eats an imbalance of phosphorus and calcium, it binds the calcium in their bodies, leading to a severe and often fatal condition known as Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD). MBD causes the squirrel’s bones to become soft, brittle, and deformed, leading to immense pain and immobility. Additionally, raw or improperly stored peanuts can harbor deadly aflatoxins—fungal toxins that cause severe liver damage in wildlife.

What to Feed Backyard Squirrels Instead

If you want to support the local wildlife without harming them, it is best to swap out peanuts for safer, more nutritious alternatives. Raw, unroasted tree nuts like almonds, hazelnuts, and walnuts in moderation are much better options. Even better are fresh vegetables such as broccoli, kale, and carrots, alongside natural foraged items like acorns and native seeds. Always provide a clean, fresh source of water, which is often more valuable to wildlife than supplemental food.

Protecting Our Backyard Wildlife

Our intentions when feeding backyard animals are always rooted in kindness, but true care means understanding their biological needs. By ditching the peanuts and offering species-appropriate nutrition, we can ensure that our neighborhood squirrels live long, healthy, and active lives.
