You might think decapitation is an instant death sentence for any living creature—it certainly is for humans. However, several hardy animals possess extraordinary biological traits that allow them to survive, move, and even reproduce despite lacking a head.

This resilience is primarily driven by fascinating physiological differences, including low metabolic rates, decentralized nervous systems, unique open circulatory systems, and astonishing regenerative powers. Here is a look at some of the most extraordinary creatures that defy biological odds post-decapitation.

1. Mike the Headless Chicken

The most famous case of headlessness in animal history belongs to Mike, a rooster who survived a beheading in the 1940s and lived for a mind-boggling 18 months. Because the axe blade missed his jugular vein and left much of his brain stem intact, Mike was able to maintain basic motor functions and remain surprisingly healthy. While neurons frequently continue firing in chickens for up to 15 minutes post-decapitation, Mike remains a record-breaking miracle.

2. Cockroaches

Famous for their extreme survival skills, cockroaches can live for weeks after losing their heads. Insects breathe through tiny openings on their bodies called spiracles rather than a mouth or nose.
