Meet the American Black Vulture
The American Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus), frequently referred to simply as the Black Vulture or Urubu, is a formidable scavenger native to the southern United States, Central America, and the vast expanses of South America. Easily identified by its dark plumage and featherless, dark grey head, this species plays a crucial ecological role by cleaning up organic waste in its natural habitat.
Dietary Habits and Opportunistic Feeding
While primarily known for feeding on carrion, these adaptable birds are opportunistic feeders. They are frequently spotted near human settlements, scanning dumps, slaughterhouses, sewers, and highways for easy meals. Beyond scavenging, their diet occasionally extends to hunting young herons, domestic ducklings, and eggs. They can also target newborn livestock, small birds, and mammals such as raccoons, opossums, and young turtles. In remarkable displays of mutualism, an Urubu can be seen meticulously picking engorged ticks and parasites off the skin of a capybara.
