Introduction to the Peacock Spider
When it comes to the animal kingdom’s most impressive courtship displays, birds of paradise and peacocks usually steal the spotlight. However, the Australian bush is home to a tiny arachnid that gives avian performers a run for their money: the Peacock Spider (Maratus volans). As a veterinarian and animal health expert, I am endlessly fascinated by the incredible adaptations and behaviors found in these diminutive creatures.
Physical Characteristics and Sexual Dimorphism
These tiny jumping spiders measure a mere 5 mm in length, yet they pack a massive visual punch. Exhibiting extreme sexual dimorphism, males boast brilliantly colored abdomens adorned with striking orange, blue, and red markings, paired with specially modified third legs that are longer, more colorful, and feature a distinct tuft of white hairs at the tip. When resting or unconcerned with courtship, males neatly fold their vibrant fan-like flaps around their abdomen. Females, by contrast, sport a much more camouflaged, dull grayish-brown appearance to protect themselves and their future offspring from predators.
The High-Stakes Mating Dance
The most iconic feature of the Maratus volans is the male’s elaborate mating ritual. To win over a prospective mate, the male performs a vibrant dance. He vibrates his abdomen, flares out his colorful side flaps like a peacock displaying its tail feathers, lifts both his legs and abdomen high, and shimmies side to side. It is a mesmerizing performance, but it comes with a terrifyingly high stake: if the female is unimpressed or not yet ready to mate, she may simply attack, kill, and eat her ambitious suitor.
Diversity Within the Species
While Maratus volans is the most famous, it is just one of many. In fact, there are over 70 known species of peacock spiders, and science continues to discover more. Each unique species boasts its own distinct color patterns and signature dance moves, making this genus one of the most diverse and captivating groups of jumping spiders on the planet.
