In 2018, marine biologist and underwater photographer Alexander Semenov captivated the scientific world by capturing breathtaking footage of an otherworldly creature gliding under the thick ocean ice off the coast of Russia. Resembling a glowing, ethereal alien, this delicate organism is known scientifically as Clione limacina, or more affectionately as the ‘Sea Angel.’ Floating effortlessly through the cold, dark ocean depths, its completely transparent body refracts light, making it appear as though it radiates a divine inner glow.
Anatomy and Adaptations of Clione limacina
Despite its delicate and celestial appearance, the Sea Angel is a specialized marine gastropod—a shell-less, predatory sea slug. Typically measuring between 2 to 4 centimeters in length, this creature features a streamlined, torpedo-shaped body specifically engineered for swift navigation through frigid Arctic and Subarctic waters. Its wing-like appendages, known as parapodia, rhythmically flap to propel it through the water column, creating the illusion of a creature floating through an underwater sky.
A Fierce Deep-Sea Hunter
Do not let its dainty form and heavenly moniker fool you; the Sea Angel is a focused and efficient carnivore. It feeds almost exclusively on shelled pteropods, colloquially known as ‘sea devils’ (Limacina helicina). When striking, the Sea Angel undergoes a dramatic transformation, extending specialized tentacles from its head to grasp its prey, extracting the sea devil from its shell with incredible dexterity. This balance of grace and predatory efficiency makes it a crucial component of the polar marine food web.
