In a fascinating twist of evolutionary biology, male seahorses are the only species in nature where the males experience pregnancy and give birth to live young. The extraordinary reproductive process begins with an elaborate courtship ritual. During this dance, the male and female synchronize their movements, swirling through the water in a graceful display that can last for hours.
Once the bond is sealed, the female deposits her mature eggs directly into the male’s specialized brood pouch, located on his ventral side. The male then fertilizes the eggs internally. Within this protective pouch, the embryos receive oxygen and nutrients through a tissue system remarkably similar to a mammalian placenta. Depending on the species and environmental conditions, the male can carry anywhere from a dozen to over a staggering 1,000 tiny babies at a time.

After a gestation period typically lasting between two to four weeks, the father undergoes dramatic muscular contractions to expel the fully formed juveniles—known as fry—into the open water.
